This month’s host is local ‘fabricator’ and ‘scenic carpenter’ Broa Sams (pictured on the right) Our co-ordinator Alex Davis grabbed Broa for a quick introduction in to Broa’s work.

Broa works primarily within the arts, live music and the film industry. He has worked with a list of contemporary British artists including Roger Hiorns, Anish Kapoor and Rachael Whiteread. He describes 60% of his work creating pieces he can create himself, but also manages larger sculptural productions working with teams.

He is also an artist in his own right and will be curating an exhibition with his wife, textile artist Clare Sams at Bourne Mill in the summer. In his professional practice he specialises in the realisation of ambitious and unusual projects for the most adventurous of clients. These projects are often fabricated in unorthodox ways from peculiar materials and are often realised on his CNC machine in Waterloo.

Please join us from 1 - 2pm on Thursday 17 May where Broa will be here in the building talking about his work, explaining his process, skills and showcasing specific projects he’s created.

Accordions in an hour with @bdaccordions

Thursday 19 April
1 - 2pm
15 Queen Street, CO1 2PH

Hailing from Mersea, independent business Black Diamond Accordions will be hosting our lunch time talk and workshop this Thursday.

Juliet Doyle and Greg Dunn have a strong passion for the squeezebox and want to showcase how fun and accessible the instrument really is. They set up the business towards the end of 2011.

Greg explains: “Black Diamond Accordions are affordable instruments, made in the oldest-established accordion factory in China, but using high-quality hand-made Italian reeds.”

Juliet and Greg are on a mission to change perceptions about the accordion and will be showcasing the different sounds, tunes, and how the instruments work. They will also be providing a brief history behind the instrument’s culturally rich heritage and will be happy to answer any questions.

They will provide various models for people to get their hands on, as well as the change to try Greg’s ‘lesson in an hour‘. “We want to showcase what a fantastic instrument the accordion is. It’s a really versatile instrument. We don’t care whose accordion you buy. We just want to help change people’s perception of it,” they said about the event.

The talk is open to all! Just drop in.

Redhotchillifella recipes

We held one spicy Lunch Time Show Off! today. Local spice man Andy Roshay hosted a lesson in creating two fiery treats - Chilli Chocolate Truffles and a Vanilla Vodka Myzo Cocktail.

You can view some of his products on his site redhotchillifella.co.uk, and don’t forget to catch him on his market stall in Colchester on Fridays near Office and Starbucks.

Here are the recipes he used today. We think Vanilla Vodka Myzo cocktails may have to become a 15 Queen Street special at our networking events. They are too delicious.

Chilli Chocolate Truffles
Ingredients

250ml/9fl oz whipping cream

225g/8oz dark chocolate 58% or more

55g/2oz unsalted butter, cut into cubes and left to soften

unsweetened Cocoa Powder, to dust

1 tsp Chipotle Chilli Dust

1. Chop the chocolate roughly Add the Chipotle Dust. Then pulse in the food processor until it’s the consistency of breadcrumbs.

2. Boil the cream. Turn on the food processor again and pour the cream very slowly onto the chocolate. It is a bit like making mayonnaise and you should soon have a perfectly smooth emulsion. If the mixture does split, process for a couple more minutes and it usually does the trick. Add the butter, bit by bit and beat until it has been incorporated. Pour the mixture into a bowl or tray and leave to cool for about 15 minutes in the fridge. When it has set to the consistency of butter icing, it is ready to be piped or spooned into truffle sized bits.

3. If piping, put mixture into a piping bag, and pipe blobs of mixture about the size of a cherry onto a tray covered with greaseproof paper, or cling film. Cool for at least two hours, then finish by rolling in cocoa powder, coconut or chopped toasted nuts.

Vanilla Vodka Myzo Cocktail
Ingredients

1/2 lemon with rind on

25ml elderflower cordial

25ml water

50ml vanilla Vodka

end of a red chilli

plenty of ice

Put the lemon in to a cocktail shaker, add the cordial and water top up with ice add the vodka and red chilli tip shake well for one minute strain in to a cocktail glass. Decorate with a small green chilli and serve.

You can also make up a tall drink by pouring into a tall glass with some ice and top up with soda water….

********************************************

Join us next month to and meet Josh Farrell, a 16 year old chicken farmer who has turned his passion for looking after animals into a real entrepreneurial skill. He will be here for our Lunch Time Show Off! on Thursday 17th December. More info here.
