Late Night Opening @firstsite

We invite you to enjoy a late night opening at our shiny neighbors, funders and supporters firstsite.
From 7 to 11pm on the 16th March the building, galleries, restaurant and bar will be open for all to come and enjoy a Friday night with a difference.
There will be a performance from the Grubby Mitts in the Learning spaces. Hands-on creative activities in the Mosaic space, including beeswax candle rolling, bell ringing, and leather stitching. Grab a drink from the bar and if you haven’t before, view the new exhibition Culpable Earth from British artist Steven Claydon.
A selection of Steven Claydon’s short films will be playing in the auditorium throughout the night and the evening is ending with a display of fire-swinging in firstsite’s D-shaped garden. Fiery!
And it’s all free; just drop in. Who said there’s nothing to do in Colchester?

Are you a crafty lady or gentleman?

It’s time for Stitch and Bitch!
Tuesday 31st January
6pm drop in
15 Queen Street, CO1 2PH
Stitch & Bitch events are traditionally knitting and having a right ol nag. At fifteen Queen Street we invite you instead to either hand sew or use a sewing machine while we natter.
This month we will be making 2012 stitching essentials: Pin Cushions & Needle Wallets.

Keep all your pins in one place with your own handmade pin cushion. It can be any shape you like - a tomato, house, flower, or a traditional pillow shape.
Needle Wallets are little felt ‘books’ you tuck your needles into. Pop it in your bag or in your craft box and never fear pricking your finger as you grab for your needle ever again!
Felt and fabric is provided but please bring your own if you have a certain idea in mind.
This is an open drop in session, starting at 6pm. We will be here til late. We have everything you need - sewing machines, needles, thread. fifteen Queen Street will provide tea, coffee, biscuits and music.
If you have a personal haberdashery project you are working on, why not bring it along? Join us to meet some local crafty ladies (and gentlemen) and have an evening of getting your stitch on.
Beginners to pros are welcome.

Tall Tales from a Large Man
This is Aaron Draplin. He is the founder of Portland’s Draplin Design Company and co-creator of Field Notes. Here he is telling a story about a sign. He’s a graphic designer and very passionate about what he does. There is strong language in this video.
Although we are the champions for creativity in Colchester. There is one event on in London this Thursday, tripped off by our resident Andy Gibbs that we had to share with you.
Draplin will be bringing his hilarious ‘Tall Tales from a Large Man’ presentation to the UK for the first time.
Using scientific proof and state-of-the-art multimedia techniques, Aaron will be delivering a suckerpunch of a talk providing proof of work, the highs and lows of a ferociously independent existence and a couple tall tales from his so-called career in the cutthroat world of contemporary graphic design.

National Novel Writing Month

Throughout November
Thursday 3, 10, 17
7.30 - 9.30pm
15 Queen Street, Colchester CO1 2PH
Novel writing fever will soon be upon us. Symptoms include flashes of brilliance, questionable plotlines, and blatant use of mixed metaphors.
Our latest flexi member Emma Kittle is a reading recovery teacher and has joined fifteen Queen Street to host National Novel Writing Month (or NaNoWriMo) here throughout November.
From midnight on November 1, armed only with their wits, the vague outline of a story, and a ridiculous deadline, more than 250,000 people around the world will set out to become novelists.
NaNoWriMo is the world’s largest writing challenge and nonprofit literary crusade. Participants pledge to write 50,000 words in a month, starting from scratch and reaching “The End” by November 30. There are no judges, no prizes, and entries are deleted from the server before anyone even reads them.
The 50,000-word challenge has a wonderful way of opening up your imagination and unleashing creativity
NaNoWriMo Founder and Executive Director (12-time NaNoWriMo winner)
More than 650 regional volunteers in more than 60 countries will hold write-ins, hosting in coffee shops, bookstores, and libraries. Write-ins offer a supportive environment and surprisingly effective peer pressure, turning the usually solitary act of writing into a community experience.
Writing a novel in a month inspires incredible confidence in seasoned and first-time novelists alike. Completing a draft of the novel they’ve been contemplating for ages gives participants a tremendous sense of accomplishment and leaves them wondering what else they’re capable of.
NaNoWriMo Program Director Lindsey Grant
So grab your pad and pen. We’ll provide the coffee, tea, and a biccy or two and lets get that novel that has been hiding inside you out! The idea is to join us every Thursday to bounce ideas off each other, discuss character, concepts, or just enjoy the company of others while you write.
If you need more info email us or call 01206 562888. You can RSVP via our meetup page here.
