Doug Selway - Such Stuff

The Minories Art Gallery
Monday to Saturday, 10am – 4pm
Private View: 7pm - 9pm, Friday 21 October
Exhibition continues until Tuesday 6 December

Doug Selway is presenting his
first major exhibition for the Minories Art Gallery on Friday 21st October. Taking his main inspiration from the fluid improvised forms of jazz music, Doug encompasses a diverse range of mediums such as film, drawing, performance, print, and sculptural assemblage. He explores static and time-based mediums as well as the relation between the transient and the permanent.

As part of the exhibition there will be a special closing performance, an open public auction. Selway will be selling his works for as low as fifty pence - as a statement towards our obsession with stuff.

The auction takes place Monday 6 December at 6pm and is titled “Everything Must Go!” And indeed, everything will go, thus making this exhibition an unrepeatable event!

You can RSVP via facebook here.

(Curator: Dr Matthew Bowman)

Nature & Animals @ The Gallery

Join Lee Thomas at The Gallery this Friday for the private view of the latest exhibition - Nature & Animals. Animals have always been strong staple of artists work, and this collection showcases a wide range of interpretations.

We are very excited by the prospect of ‘The Aviary’, a collection and assemblage of bird like forms.

Our resident photographer Jonathan Doyle showed us this video of his friend Mandii Pope’s recent solo exhibition at Cork Street Gallery in London. An artist with “guts and determination”, her work ranges from emotive spin paintings, ‘Best of British’ portraits, abstract paintings, nudes, to cityscapes. Phew! This video really captures Mandii and her work.

Robinson @ the Minories

Matthew Bowman, lecturer at Colchester Institute has curated an exhibition at the Minories Art Gallery opening tonight.

Join him for a the private view from 6pm to 8pm.

The exhibition showcases work by Robinson, a local artist from 1910-1986. He worked in modernist art styles and joined the RAF during the second world war. A prolific artist working whatever materials he had to hand, this is a large scale exhibition that aims to be something of a giant sketchbook/diary rather than taking an overly selective approach to his oeuvre.

The exhibition runs until 15th October, so if you can’t make it down tonight take time out to enjoy it over the month.

Embroiderers Guild @ Layer Marney Tower

We went along to the end of exhibition celebration for the Embroiderers Guild at Layer Marney Tower.

They have been based in two rooms of the tower throughout August showcasing the best needle work, gold work and embroidery the guild has produced. Some were inspired by their visit to the tower earlier in the year, the rest, their own self instructed craft. Here are a few photos, but it was quite hard to capture the pure brilliance of the pieces due to lacking a steady hand and the harshness of flash.

A fabric wall housing some beautiful embroidery of colourful geometric shapes. Who doesn’t love Henry the 8th?

We were blown away by this structured embroidered chimney, inspired by the Layer Marney Tower. It’s hard to see but it had padding underneath the work so it had an amazing relief effect coming right out of the frame. Smoking.

Sadly the exhibition is now over but we wanted to post this blog entry to highlight the great work the Embroiderers Guild do. We would like to shout out a well done to Lesley Sams, Linda Watts and all the other crafty ladies involved for a fantastic exhibition.

The Embroiderers Guild run monthly morning meetings here at 15 Queen Street every last Saturday of the month. Join us for workshops on all sorts of crafts (not just embroidery) from silk work, gold work, to using foils and metalic fabrics. They are open to everyone and we recommend you come along to be introduced to a new craft or skill.

The next workshop will be Saturday 24th September 10am - 12pm, more info here. Hope to see you at 15 Queen Street getting crafty!
