One Line @ Jardine

Jardine Cafe & Bistro
Westcott House, 140 High Street, Wivenhoe, CO7 9AF

Private View Monday 7th May, 7.30 - 10pm
Exhibition on until the end of May.

We’re pleased to shout about a new exhibition by our flexible member Mary Pullen. Mary is an alumna of the London College of Communication with a degree in Book Arts and Crafts, currently working as a freelance illustrator and book artist from her studio in East Anglia.

Mary’s illustration work is inspired by everyday forms, both natural and synthetic, and records ‘live’ observations on site and in the moment using a variety of experimental drawing techniques.

Using the opportunity to spend time as Artist in Residence at Jardine Cafe’ & Bistro, Mary is currently making new work to expand her One Line series of illustrations, to be shown in her solo exhibition in may 2012. Mary’s unique and limited edition artist’s books reveal her passion for original and traditional folktales and intriguing superstitions. Content is created using illustrations, printmaking, photography and paper engineering often combined with creative writing prose and poetry. With a mission to pass on traditional skills to one and all, Mary devises and leads creative workshops in bookbinding and book arts for participants of all ages, drawing on a successful career in teaching to create the perfect workshop for each client group.

Mary’s illustration and book art work has been shown in exhibitions including Women in Artists’ Books (London College of Communication 2008), Images 32 (The Association of Illustrators 2009), Mile End Ancestors (English Heritage 2009), Common Ground (Walthamstow Art Trail 2010), Infiltrating the System (UWE 2011) and published in Uppercase Canada (2010).

There is an open invite for the Private View on Monday. Look forward to seeing you there.

Art on 5

Lawrence Owen
27th February - 24th March
Art Exchange - Art on 5 @ University of Essex

There is a new exhibition on at the Art Exchange gallery based at the University of Essex.

Laurence Owen makes a series of images which are both disturbing and familiar using the supposedly childish medium of felt tips.

He presents a skewed rendition of the everyday, appropriating the language of advertising, photographs and holiday brochures to his own ends. Owen calls his felt tip drawings ‘a newsreel of everyday life’, resulting in images that lie somewhere between the fantastical and the mundane.

Alongside the exhibition is a fantastic series of accompanying events from artists talks, workshops, films and a lunch time tour. Visit the exhibition page for details.

Slack Space: From Barsham to Albion

7 March – 24 March
Open Wed – Sat 11am – 6pm
Victoria Place, Eld Lane

Slack Space has secured the entire archive of the seminal and pioneering East Anglian Albion Fair movement of the 70’s and 80’s for their new exhibition.

The exhibition is a retrospective and joyful celebration of the legendary Albion Fairs.

A collection of beautiful and iconic posters, photographs, films and assorted memorabilia from the fairs, including the ultimate monthly newspaper of alternative East Anglia, the Waveney Clarion.

Comfort was far from the norm (ask anyone who attended an Albion Fair about the infamous “long drop” toilets!) the music was sometimes dodgy, there were often far more naked people than one really wanted to encounter at the water standpipes in the morning. But the real ale and the vegan food was always plentiful and there was something quite special in being part of several thousand people gathering together in our little corner of rural England to live for a weekend in peace, love and harmony.

Sadly, the festival movement was a mirror of the times. The relative tolerance of a “free festival culture” by government in the late seventies and very early eighties had given way to a far more repressive regime. Free festivals could no longer flourish due to the new public order acts which banned gatherings on public land, and The Albion Fairs were no more.

Good thing the Colchester Free Festival is bringing this movement back.

There will be a viewing and celebration from 6- 10 pm on Saturday 10th March.
They will be showing some special documentary films, with musical and street theatre offerings from the period.

Mulled wine available, otherwise bring your own drink and make an evening of it!

Light and Dark @ Slack Space

Today marks the new exhibition from Slack Space at their new venue in Victoria Place off Eld Lane (opposite the fudge shop).

We popped down to view their new exhibition ‘Light and Dark’.

A themed show featuring the work of local artists producing imaginative and high quality interpretations of the theme in a variety of media. Mainly wall based work, there are some stunning photographs that capture the brief perfectly.

The show is running from Wednesday 25th January to Saturday 11 February.

Light and Dark features work from:
Eddie Bacon
Paula Vans
Andy King
Alexander Blustin
Stefanie Moss
Anthony Freeman
Sheila King
Stephen Waring
Jack Brown
Elin Evensen
Eleanor Hilsden

The exhibition also has a double bill show in one of the side rooms entitled - ‘Primary 2’. Primary 2 follows on from their first Primary show featuring work from Myland Primary School, Stanway Primary School, Millfields school, Essex Home Educators and Colchester High School.

This is a charming display of work from the young artists featuring drawings, paintings and we even spotted a paper mache breakfast. We like!

Come and join Slack Space at their new premises at Victoria Place on Eld Lane Wednesday to Saturday 11am - 6pm.
